There Is e There Are em Inglês: Como Dizer “Tem” e “Existe”
O que significa “there is” e “there are“
There is a book on the table. (Tem um livro na mesa. / Há um livro na mesa.)
There are two dogs in the yard. (Tem dois cachorros no quintal. / Há dois cachorros no quintal.)
Regra simples: use “there is“ quando o que vem depois é singular, e “there are“ quando é plural.
There is not (isn’t) a bank near here. (Não tem um banco perto daqui.)
There are not (aren’t) any apples in the fridge. (Não tem maçãs na geladeira.)
Atenção ao “any”: em frases negativas e perguntas, usamos “any” no lugar de “some” antes do substantivo plural ou incontável, isso é um detalhe que aparece bastante nessa estrutura.
Como fazer perguntas
Assim como no “to be“, para fazer perguntas invertemos a ordem “is/are” vem antes de “there“:
Is there a bathroom here? (Tem um banheiro aqui?)
Are there any restaurants nearby? (Tem restaurantes por perto?)
Respostas curtas:
Is there a bank near here? → Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.
Are there any apples? → Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.
Some e Any: os companheiros mais comuns de “there is/are”
Essa estrutura costuma aparecer bastante ao lado de “some“ e “any“, que indicam quantidade indefinida (“alguns”, “algum”):
Some — usado em frases afirmativas:
There are some books on the shelf. (Tem alguns livros na estante.)
Any — usado em negativas e perguntas:
There aren’t any books on the shelf. (Não tem nenhum livro na estante.)
Are there any books on the shelf? (Tem algum livro na estante?)
Dica prática: decore o padrão “SOME para afirmativa, ANY para negativa e pergunta“, essa regra vale não só para “there is/are“, mas para várias outras estruturas do inglês também.
There is/are com quantidades e números
There are three chairs in the room. (Tem três cadeiras na sala.)
There is a lot of traffic today. (Tem muito trânsito hoje.)
There are many people at the party. (Tem muita gente na festa.)
There isn’t much time left. (Não tem muito tempo sobrando.)
Um diálogo completo para praticar
A: Excuse me, is there a supermarket near here?
B: Yes, there is! It’s on Oak Street, next to the bank.
A: Great, thanks! Is there a pharmacy too?
B: Hmm, there isn’t a pharmacy on this street, but there’s one two blocks away.
A: Perfect. Are there any restaurants around here?
B: Yes, there are several restaurants! There’s a great Italian place right there.
A: Thank you so much for your help!
There is a small park near my house. There are many trees and a beautiful lake. There isn’t a playground, but there are some benches where people relax. On weekends, there are usually a lot of families with kids. Is there a park like this near your house too?
Repare como “there is” e “there are” aparecem naturalmente, várias vezes, ao longo de uma descrição simples de um lugar — essa é exatamente a função principal dessa estrutura.
Erros mais comuns que eu vejo
1. Traduzir “tem” usando “have”
❌ Have a book on the table. ✅ There is a book on the table.
2. Confundir singular e plural
❌ There is two dogs in the yard. ✅ There are two dogs in the yard.
3. Usar “some” em perguntas e negativas
❌ Are there some restaurants nearby? ✅ Are there any restaurants nearby?
4. Esquecer o “there” e começar a frase só com “is/are”
❌ Is a bank near here? ✅ Is there a bank near here?

Perguntas frequentes sobre there is e there are
Qual a diferença entre “there is/are” e “it is”? “There is/are” introduz a existência de algo novo na conversa (There is a book on the table — apresentando o livro pela primeira vez). “It is” se refere a algo já mencionado antes (The book is on the table. It is very interesting.).
Existe contração de “there is”? Sim! “There is” pode ser contraído para “there’s”, muito usado na fala informal: There’s a book on the table. “There are” geralmente não é contraído da mesma forma na escrita, embora na fala rápida possa soar parecido.
“There is” pode ser usado com substantivos incontáveis? Sim! Substantivos incontáveis (como “water”, “money”, “traffic”) sempre usam “there is”, mesmo representando uma “quantidade grande”: There is a lot of traffic today.
Como sei se devo usar “some” ou “any” nessa estrutura? A regra geral é: “some” em frases afirmativas, “any” em negativas e perguntas. Essa regra vale para “there is/are” e também para várias outras estruturas do inglês.
